Breaking Barriers Yoga is an adaptive yoga program we have created from the ground up to best serve the needs of our individual participants. We create weekly yoga sequences for our classes and we take turns teaching our own unique yoga sequence in our own style and doing physical assists.
Although there are parts of class that apply to all participants in the yoga asana flow, every participant is considered and has their own individual needs. Therefore, we use a collaborative approach when teaching. We customize certain aspects of class to each participant’s specific needs and each enjoy one on one attention during class. We work on physical alignment with use of physical assists and specially designed yoga props. This creates strength training to build endurance and muscle tone. The yoga poses work on flexibility and range of motion. The consistent flow of sequences work on mental endurance and build muscle memory.

Every yoga class ends with guided or unguided therapeutic mediation where participants have an opportunity to utilize internal coping skills, have a period of uninterrupted rest and relaxation and receive therapeutic mini massages. The opportunity to bond physically and emotionally with the instructors and peers create socialization and foster individual independence. This experience creates an empowering and true person centered environment where both the instructors and the participants break social, emotional, physical and mental barriers cohesively. Together, we hope to bring awareness of adaptive yoga for adults with developmental disabilities and reveal their inner warrior on and off the mat.

Although FRIENDS is generous enough to allow us to utilize their space, Breaking Barriers is its own separate entity. For all registration, questions, concerns and more information, please contact Narie McIntire directly by phone (listed above) or by email: nariemcintire@gmail.com.

We welcome caregivers and parents to come observe your participant’s first class; in light of fostering independence and removing distractions for other participants, we would like to keep observations to one class. Breaking Barriers does provide mobile private yoga lessons to both caregivers and participants in the privacy of their own home and would love to discuss this option to fit your needs.
